Why cords matter
The danger is quiet, and it happens in seconds.
Health Canada identifies corded window coverings as a leading strangulation hazard for children under five. A child can become entangled in an accessible pull cord, an inner lift cord, or a looped chain, often in the rooms where they sleep and play, and often without a sound.
Where children rest
Cribs, beds, and play areas are often set near windows, exactly where accessible cords hang. Bedrooms and nurseries are the highest-risk rooms in the home.
Older blinds linger
Corded blinds installed years ago are still in millions of homes. If a window covering in your home has an accessible cord or loop, it's worth replacing.
The Canadian standard
What the law requires since 2021.
Canada was among the first countries in the world to comprehensively regulate corded window coverings. Under the Corded Window Coverings Regulations (SOR/2019-97), made under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act and in force since May 1, 2021, window coverings sold in Canada must either have no accessible cords at all, or keep any accessible cord short enough that it can't form a hazardous loop.

A gentle push or pull on the bottom rail raises and lowers the shade. No cords, no chains, nothing for a child to reach. It's our default across roller, zebra, and cellular shades.

Fully cordless and operated by remote, app, or voice, motorized shades work with Google Home, Apple Home, and Alexa. Ideal for nurseries and any window that's hard to reach.

Replacing older corded blinds is the surest fix. Until then, Health Canada recommends a few simple steps to lower the risk.
- Go cordless in kids' rooms first. Prioritize bedrooms, nurseries, and playrooms where children spend unsupervised time.
- Move cribs, beds, and furniture away from windows. Keep anything a child can climb on well clear of cords and chains.
- Keep all cords out of reach. Tie up or anchor loose cords with a cleat, and never leave a cord hanging near the floor.
- Check every room, including older ones. Inner lift cords and continuous loops can be just as dangerous as an obvious pull cord.
- When in doubt, replace it. If a covering has an accessible cord or loop, cordless is the only way to remove the hazard entirely.

Yes. Cordless operation is our default across roller, zebra, cellular, and blackout shades, and every motorized option is fully cordless. We build to meet and exceed Canada's Corded Window Coverings Regulations, so there are no accessible cords or hazardous loops for a child or pet to reach.
They're federal rules under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, in force since May 1, 2021. Window coverings sold in Canada must either have no accessible cords or keep any accessible cord short enough (no longer than 22 cm, and no loop with a perimeter over 44 cm under a gradual 35 N pull) that it can't form a strangulation hazard.
The regulations apply to new products sold in Canada, not to blinds already in your home. But Health Canada strongly recommends replacing older corded window coverings, especially in rooms where children spend time. Going cordless is the only way to remove the hazard completely.
Not meaningfully. Cordless lift is our standard build at no premium on most shades. Motorized options cost more for the motor and controls, but there's no upcharge simply to make a blind child-safe. We'll walk through the options and pricing at your free in-home measurement.
